By downloading or using Patine you agree to what follows. If you do not agree, do not use the app; if you have already paid for a subscription and change your mind, Apple’s refund process is described below.
What Patine is
Patine looks at photographs of an object and tells you what it appears to be, what similar objects have sold for at auction, and how confident it is. It is a research tool.
What Patine is not
It is not an appraisal, and we are not appraisers. Nothing the app produces is a certified valuation, and it must not be presented as one to an insurer, a court, a tax authority, an executor or a buyer. Where a formal valuation is needed — probate, insurance, a disputed estate, anything with a legal consequence — the answer is a qualified appraiser who has the object in their hands.
Everything the app shows is an estimate built from photographs and from records of what other objects sold for. Photographs conceal repairs, replacements, marriages and outright fakes that a person holding the piece would find in seconds. Two objects that look identical can be worth ten times each other. We say so on the result screen, and we are saying it again here.
We do not warrant that an identification is correct, that a value range is achievable, or that a comparable sale is a true match for your object. When the app tells you it is not sure, that is not a malfunction — it is the app working.
Free scans, and what a subscription includes
Every new installation gets three complete scans, free. Complete means complete: the full result, the full evidence, nothing blurred, nothing truncated and nothing held back until you pay.
After that, two subscriptions are offered, and both prices are shown before purchase:
| Plan | Price | Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Yearly | $39.99 a year, after a 3-day free trial | Unlimited scans |
| One week | $6.99 a week | 50 scans in the period |
The weekly plan’s scan limit is printed on the paywall before you buy it, and it is printed here. It exists because a scan costs us real money and a small number of very heavy users would otherwise be subsidised by everyone else. Fifty is chosen to be invisible to anyone using the app as intended.
Prices above are the United States storefront. Your own storefront’s price and currency are shown in the app before you are asked to confirm, and they are what you will be charged.
Renewal and cancellation
Both plans renew automatically at the end of each period unless you cancel at least 24 hours before it ends. Your Apple Account is charged on renewal. You can cancel at any time in the App Store — Settings, your name, Subscriptions — and the app shows you where. Cancelling stops the next renewal; it does not end the period you have already paid for, and you keep access until that period runs out.
If you start the free trial and cancel before it ends, you are not charged. Any unused part of a free trial is forfeited if you buy a subscription during it, which is Apple’s rule and not ours.
Refunds are handled by Apple, not by us. We cannot issue one, and we cannot see your
payment details. Apple’s process is at reportaproblem.apple.com.
Using the app fairly
Do not attempt to extract our comparable-sales index in bulk, reverse-engineer or circumvent the checks that stop automated requests, or resell the app’s output as an appraisal service. Do not upload photographs you have no right to use.
Other people’s content and links
A comparable sale links out to the auction house that published it. Those pages are theirs, their content and their prices, and we do not control them or guarantee they will stay up. Where the app shows items currently for sale, those are live listings on a marketplace — asking prices, which nobody has paid — and they are labelled as such throughout the app for that reason.
Ownership
The app, its design, its writing and its index are ours. Your photographs and your notes are yours; we claim no ownership of them, and we do not use them for anything except producing the answer you asked for.
If you submit a correction through the “This isn’t right” control, you give us permission to use that correction to improve the app.
Liability
Patine is provided as it is. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from a decision you made using it — a piece bought, a piece sold, a piece declined or a piece insured for the wrong figure.
Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and if you are a consumer you keep every right your local law gives you regardless of what this page says.
Apple
Apple requires these terms to say a few things, and they are true, so here they are.
This agreement is between you and us, not Apple, and Apple is not responsible for the app or its content. Your licence to use Patine is a non-transferable licence to run it on Apple devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service. Apple has no obligation to provide any support or maintenance for the app; we do, at the address below. If the app fails to conform to any applicable warranty, you may notify Apple and Apple will refund the purchase price; beyond that, Apple has no other warranty obligation. We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claim about the app — product liability, a failure to conform to a legal requirement, a consumer-protection claim, or a claim that the app infringes someone’s intellectual property. You confirm that you are not in a country subject to a US Government embargo or designated as terrorist-supporting, and that you are not on any US Government list of prohibited or restricted parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of this agreement and may enforce it against you.
Changes and ending
We may change these terms; the date at the top changes when we do, and a change that affects what you are paying for will not be applied retroactively to a period you have already bought. We may suspend an installation that is abusing the service in the ways described above.
These terms are between you and [legal entity, registered address, and the law and courts that govern this agreement, to be inserted before launch].
